Today is the first day of Navaratri dedicated to Sri Shailaputri who is the first among Navadurgas.

Navadurga is the nine forms of Durga. ‘Nava’ means nine. The Vedas say that there are nine forms of Durga. In North India it is customary to worship each Navadurga on that particular Navratri days.Nava Durga - Durga's incarnations:

3. Chandra Kanda
4. Sushmanda
5. Skanda Mata
6. Kadhyayani
7. Kaala rathiri
8. Mahagauri

Shri Shailaputri 

The first form of Goddess Durga is Sailaputri. It is customary to worship Shailaputri Durga on the first day of Navratri. Shailaputri means ‘daughter of the mountains’. She was the daughter of Himawan, the king of the mountains. She has various names like Parvati, Sati, Bhavani Devi.

She is also known as ‘Dakshayini’ as she was born the daughter of Dakshan in her previous incarnation. She is the goddess Parvati who is married to Shiva.

She is the first of the nine chakras, the Mooladhara. Her vehicle is Nandi and she is carrying a sceptor weapon ...

✪ She won Lakshmi's heart. Full moon shines on her head. Her waist band makes jingling sound. She is beautiful and radiant. She is pleased with Vama marga method of worship. She is Supreme Sankari.

• The names ‘naLinI’, ‘rAja rAjESvarI’, ‘sukha karI’, ‘ sarvESvarI’ and ‘raNat kinkiNi mEkhalA’ are found in the Lalita Sahasranama.

Matangi: The Utterance of the Divine Word. Mata literally means "a thought" or "an opinion". Matangi is thus the Goddess power which has entered into thought or the mind. She is the word as the embodiment of thought. She bestows knowledge, talent and expertise.
