Madurashtakam | मधुराष्टकं | மதுராஷ்டகம்

The Madhurāṣṭakam  is a Sanskrit composition in devotion of Krishna, composed by the Hindu Bhakti philosopher-poet Sripad Vallabha Acharya.  Sripad Vallabhacharya flourished under the patronage of the Vijayanagara King Sri Krishnadevarya in the late fifteenth century Karnataka State and created many other literary pieces.

The devotional hymn "Madhurāṣṭakam" of Sri Vallabhacharya was created to lead the devotee in Pustimarga, the Path of Grace, which involves a constant love-filled devotion to Krishna by various acts of homage, such as singing (kirtana), remembering (smarana), conceptualising and beholding (darshana) a beatific image of the deity upon singing of the Madhurāṣṭakam, and offering of services (seva). 

These acts enable the devotee to enter into the divine presence of Sri Krishna and to experience the Lord's real essence (svarupa) which are in fact, succinctly laid down by the Madhurāṣṭakam. Hence, Madhurāṣṭakam plays an instrumental role in the realisation of the Lord.

अधरं मधुरं वदनं मधुरं

நயனம் மதுரம் ஹஸிதம் மதுரம் |

Meaning :

Krishna's lip, face, eye, smile, heart and gait are all sweet and nice. Everything about the Lord of sweetness is sweet.

வசனம் மதுரம் சரிதம் மதுரம்
வஸனம் மதுரம் வலிதம் மதுரம் |
சலிதம் மதுரம் ப்ரமிதம் மதுரம்
மதுராதிபதேரகிலம் மதுரம் || 2 ||

Meaning :

His words/utterances, character, dress, bodily form, gait and roaming about, are all sweet. Everything about the lord of sweetness is sweet.

வேணுர்மதுரோ ரேணுர்மதுர:
பாணிர்மதுர: பாதௌ மதுரௌ |
நிருத்யம் மதுரம் ஸக்யம் மதுரம்
மதுராதிபதேரகிலம் மதுரம் || 3 ||

Meaning :

His flute(its notes), dust under his feet, hand, feet, dance and friendship/company are all sweet. Everything about the lord of sweetness is sweet.

கீதம் மதுரம் பீதம் மதுரம்
புக்தம் மதுரம் ஸுப்தம் மதுரம் |
ரூபம் மதுரம் திலகம் மதுரம்
மதுராதிபதேரகிலம் மதுரம் || 4 ||

Meaning :

His song, drinking act, eating act, sleeping pose, personality, and the mark on his forehead are all sweet. Everything about the Lord of sweetness is sweet.

Vamitam Madhuram Shamitam Madhuram

करणं मधुरं तरणं मधुरं

கரணம் மதுரம் தரணம் மதுரம்
ஹரணம் மதுரம் ஸ்மரணம் மதுரம் |
வமிதம் மதுரம் ஶமிதம் மதுரம்
மதுராதிபதேரகிலம் மதுரம் || 5 ||

Meaning :

His action, swimming, stealing/snatching, sport, mutterings and timid actions are all sweet. Everything about the Lord of sweetness is sweet.

Meaning :

His humming (melody or playing on the flute?), garland, the river Yamuna, its waves, water and the lotus are all sweet. Everything about the Lord of sweetness is sweet.

His cowherd girl friends, their sport, company, separation, looking at them and their good behaviour are all sweet. Everything about the Lord of sweetness is sweet.

கோபா மதுரா காவோ மதுரா
யஷ்டிர் மதுரா ஸ்ருஷ்டிர் மதுரா |
தலிதம் மதுரம் பலிதம் மதுரம்
மதுராதிபதேரகிலம் மதுரம் || 8 ||

Meaning :

The cowherd boy friends, the cows, the forms he creates, his domination over all and the results therefrom are all sweet. Everything about the Lord of sweetness is sweet.
